July 4th CodeSwitch: We become the working class tea party (again)!

Trump and his failed soon to be cancelled reality TV show trying to masquerade as a government are about to milk the 250th celebration of our independence from another oppressive government for all it’s worth. Remember that 18th century British Royal Buffoonery that taxed our colonies, coming and going, for every ship’s cargo sailing across the Atlantic? Damn right we threw their tea and taxes overboard, and should do the same with Trump and his taxes at the polls in 2026!

Having scraped and saved my way to the middle class, at least before Trump’s taxes and tariffs, I just looked through the NYTime’s analysis of the bill and it won’t save me much, and I sure as hell know Trump’s new tariffs will take back that and more. For example, 80 odd days into Trump’s “90 trade treaties in 90 days” blunder he’s made maybe 3, and one is with Great Britain. And just like the 1700s, Britain screwed Trump and us over… Say you’re restoring a classic Land Rover or other British car, and find under that timeless aluminum body a rusted out steel frame. Fortunately while the British auto industry barely survives, most of the suppliers are still around and will be happy to supply a replacement frame, and galvanized to boot! But after giving you maybe a few bucks cut on your taxes, Trump’s 25% tariff on British auto parts will add thousands of $$$ to the cost of your classic British auto restoration! But the Brits put one over on Trump, negotiating a mere 10% tariff for up to 100,000 new cars a year, and you can bet those discounted tariffs will go on $100,000+ new Range Rovers, Bentleys, and Rolls Royces while your restoration gets taxed to death.

It gets worse, 87 trade treaties to go and most of the stuff we working folks buy ain’t even made here any more, and the last American factory was replaced with a Walmart. So in what amounts to a de facto federal sales tax the couple dollars Trump and his Criminal Enterprise AKA the GOP Party maybe spare us in our paycheck get taken back and more in Tariffs. Then there’s the middle class tax breaks like the energy efficiency tax breaks for windows, doors, heat pumps, TVs, and even wood stoves- All taken away in Trump’s new tax bill! Worse yet, Trump’s stealing your health insurance could be fatal!

So hopefully you’re properly pissed by now, but before you push a Land Rover overboard we need to talk strategy. By promoting and enacting fair progressive taxes and supporting working people we became the mainstream party that elected Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, Carter, Clinton, Obama, Biden, and decades long congressional majorities. Then we got lost in pronouns and other PC and Trump stole our voters.

America is not a country of latent socialists waiting to be set free, though we expect capitalism to actually feature competition and not greedy monopolies. We don’t mind paying our fair share in taxes, but resisting unfair taxes is darn near in our DNA. Having spent decades accusing us of levying oppressive taxes, Trump and his party have committed the actual offense themselves. This is our opportunity to CodeSwitch, “turn the tables”, and become the party of revolt against Trump and the GOPs unfair taxes and win back the working class majority that wins elections!

Fascists: Assassinations Foretell Your Defeat…

On April 3, 1968 Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. spoke:

“Well, I don’t know what will happen now. We’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn’t matter with me now, because I’ve been to the mountaintop. And I don’t mind. Like anybody, I would love to live a long life; longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do god’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the Promised Land! I may not get there with you, but I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land! So I’m happy tonight, I’m not worried about anything! I’m not fearing any man! Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord!”

A day later he was assassinated.

Today his birthday is a national holiday and we have elected our first black president.

On November 18, 1978 San Francisco Board of Supervisors member Harvey Milk said:

“I cannot prevent some people from feeling angry and frustrated and mad in response to my death, but I hope they will take the frustration and madness and instead of demonstrating or anything of that type, I would hope that they would take the power and I would hope that five, ten, a hundred, a thousand would rise. I would like to see every gay lawyer, every gay architect come out, stand up, and let the world know. That would do more to end prejudice overnight than anybody could imagine. I urge them to do that, urge them to come out. Only that way will we start to achieve our rights, … All I ask is for the movement to continue, and if a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door…”

Nine days later Harvey Milk and San Francisco Mayor George Muscone were assassinated.

Since then we have elected thousands of gays and most of our population is protected by gay and trans inclusive human rights laws.

On June 14, 2025 Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman, husband Mark, and their Golden Retriever Gilbert were assassinated. The same assassin wounded Minnesota Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette.

In his deluded mind the assassin thinks he is single handedly changing the course of history. In reality history teaches us that the assassin is the rear guard of decadent and dying totalitarian regimes. Fascism’s strongest weapon is fear and fascism dies when we deny it authority.

Trump’s Tariffs: Incompetence or Insider Trading? Or Worse?

CD7 & SD15 Outreach & Inclusion Officers update for March 19, 2025

Trump’s Tariffs: Incompetence or Insider Trading? Or Worse?

After Trumps two day tariff and their might have been a three dayer in their too, Trump’s Tariffs DeJour have us thoroughly confused. But businesses great and small are not confused, they’ve been hauling and stashing away so much stuff we’ve seen record port volumes in the usually dead months of winter and supply chains clogged like it’s peak season. Not two months into Trump’s term supply chain managers have no pencils or fingernails left and stockholders are gnawing their holdings too.

For the stats geeks the stock indexes just sunk below the 200 day moving averages while the couple trillion dollars fleeing the stock market is bidding bond rates down a bit, but auto and loan rates are still too high and credit card rates unsufferable. Insulting the country and people you’re negotiating with while switching from one nebulous demand to an even wackier one is SOP in Trump’s “Art of the Steal” and it’s not going over well with trading partners or investors.

Not that Trump even cares… Today he confirmed that his tweaker tariffs might crash the market and cause a recession, and he’s OK with that.???

‘Cause Trump and his billionaire buddies are in a whole different market called “Private Equity”, where even general admission pretty much requires a million in liquid assets. And unlike the stock market where there are at least some basic reporting and governance requirements Private Equity is just that, private, sorta like the stock market before the market crash of 1929 that we democrats had to clean up.

Why should we care? Ever hear of “Blackstone”?

Remember age depressed property values of the recession of 2008 or so, when Private Equity like Blackstone was Hoovering up homes and commercial property in such volumes that they could manipulate the housing market? Blackstone has a mere TRILLION+ $$$ under management, dwarfed by ex Blackrock with 11 TRILLION that’s about twice our annual national budget and the GDP of most nations. The there’s the billionaires, all 2000+ of them and their 14 TRILLION+ $$$ of net worth. Throw in the “Family Offices”, Trusts, and other tax dodges and they’ve probably got more trillions in capital than we got national debt.

Bad enough that wealthy day traders can profit massively in a crashing market as Trump’s tariffs DeJour send stocks up and down every day. Beginning to see why Trump isn’t worried about a recession… “It’s not a bug, it’s a feature!”

So when the market bottoms and even the million Schwab millionaires are having trouble making the payments and putting food on the table, Trump and his billionaire buddies and assorted low life “disaster capitalists” will be sucking up assets for pennies on the dollar while we hunt rabbits and not for pets.

MN 7th Congressional District Democrats Outreach & Inclusion Officers Report for March 2025

CD7 and SD15 Outreach & Inclusion Officers Report for March, 2025

Pace yourself…

We often heard that warning from elders when we were young and maybe too enthusiastic and thought we could change the world, hopefully for the better, in a day if not by suppertime. In a “Flood the Zone” strategy Trump, Musk, and their fascist followers are dumping a full four year term’s worth of largely illegal power grabs and repression in barely a month. And it’s working- My social media feeds are full of impassioned invites to mindless demonstrations against whatever craziness Trump proposed today, with no long term plan beyond walking around with protest signs and yelling our grievences to the assembled masses of small wildlife. Demonstrations have zero persuasive impact on today’s republicon party which has purged any moderates and keeps the remaining in line with threats of billionaire funded primary challenges. But we can make demonstrations an organizing tool while thwarting the Green/DSA/“progressive” allies of the republicons attempts to use demonstrations to syphon off voters who can provide the margin of victory for our democratic candidates.

Reality check:

When in doubt, do the maths… It takes a 2/3rds supermajority of the senate to remove Trump, and we’re 4 senators short of even a bare majority. There will be 22 republican held senate seats up for election in 2026, and we’d need to win a near impossible 20 to gain the 2/3rds majority needed to remove Trump and then VP Vance. The Social Security mortality tables give the Grim Reaper better odds of about 30% chance of removing Trump, making Vance an incumbent. So we’re stuck with Trump or worse yet his smarter protege Vance through 2028. Beyond 2028 we need a party and presidential candidate with a vision beyond reacting to Trump and the Iowa Caucuses back too, but that’s beyond my pay grade.

We have congressional elections in 2026 with voting beginning barely 18 months from now and a couple special elections already scheduled this year, and the republicons have a barely working one vote majority. Unless you’re a lawyer and feel like taking Trump et al to court, the 2026 elections are our best chance to defund Trump into a tired Hoover that needs it’s bag emptied. We know how to win congressional and downballot elections- It starts with getting behind our candidates with early support and taking advantage of the issues that Trump and his republicans are handing us with their screwups. We start that with party building- Many of our party units will be electing new leadership in the next few months, and we need young(er) leaders to take the reins from our overdue for retirement “old guard”, myself included. Same with candidates- Most of our republican opponents have been campaigning for years, we need to get our candidates out on the campaign trail ASAP to catch up!

We also need to expand our community outreach, which will be vital with the damage Trump is doing to our communities and especially our food supply. I encourage you to follow our CD7 Chair’s lead and plant early and often- When Trump’s tariffs and deportations make food unaffordable if you can find any, we can provide relief and grow new democratic voters too!

And finally, keep voting with your dollars- I follow investing and the news that pro diversity Costco’s stock is up by double digits while diversity denier Target’s is slipping downward has been widely reported. Every day is boycott day, and our spending choices plus Trump’s tariffs and other screwups that will harm American businesses great and small are a wedge that will drive business people and their $$$ back to our democratic party.

Minnesota Congressional District 7 Outreach & InclusionOfficers Report for February 2025

CD7 and SD15 Outreach and Inclusion Officers report for February 2025

Hope you all took last months advice to “get ready” and at least loaded up at Costco!

Here’s the SitRep (Situation Report, you’ll get used to that term):

  • We may be on the verge of a humanitarian crisis as Trump has ordered roundups and crack downs on immigrants and transgender people. So far this has been immigration enforcement theatre as the deportation rate has been about the same as under Biden, and even at this thousand a day rate it’d take 30+ years to deport just the current undocumented immigrants. None the less, crops are already wasting unpicked as farm workers are afraid to leave home.
  • Trump has illegally fired key personnel at several agencies as well as at least a dozen  watchdog Inspector Generals. The vendetta extends to the FBI where anyone involved in the January 6 investigations is being fired, that’s probably over a thousand FBI agents. Whole agencies like AID look to be wiped out and another thousand workers at EPA may be fired.
  • Elon Musk’s operatives have breeched computer systems at Treasury, Agency for International Development (AID), and Office of Personnel Management (OPM).
  • Trump has ordered 25% tariffs on everything but energy which only gets hit 10% from our allies Canada and Mexico, while the main offender China gets a 10% slap on the wrist. Combined with the disappearance of immigrant labor these tariffs will drastically lower prices paid to our farmers while making animal agriculture unprofitable too. Need a new truck for your farm or business? Most of them are either assembled or get components from Canada and Mexico and will see double digit price increases. Trump’s pricin’ his poor “coal rollers” right outa the market!
  • Federal systems are already failing- Today the FAA NOTAM (Notices To Airmen) system was     down. On social media I’m hearing that so many federal employees are retiring OPM can’t keep up!
  • DFL chair Ken Martin elected DNC chair and will bring his winning ways to the national party!
  • In a special election Iowa dems won a state senate seat in a district where Trump won by 20+%!

So what the heck we gonna do about this mess?

We are 21 months away from a general election so it’s time for party building and candidate recruiting. Our DFL electeds will do their best to protect us and deserve our support, especially in the 2026 elections. We can protest all we want but the Republicans have the majorities in congress and don’t give a damn. Maybe we’ll have to starve these beasts…

When even a bunch of us 70 million democratic voters moves our money it has an effect. TC Pride kicked Target right outa the park and parade, with Target’s $50K sponsorship more than replaced by donations within hours. Meanwhile, Costco’s board and 98% of their stock voted to keep DEI, you know where to shop… Which Segways into ethical investing and shopping, and here’s some resources:

https://www.hrc.org/resources/employers

HRC recently updated for 2025, Ethisphere and Just Capital should soon be updating.

And then there’s the beastliest of beasts, Trump’s federal government! Now there are some interesting tax credits that less than 2% of us taxpayers even claim for 30% of the cost of useful stuff like energy efficient wood stoves, heat pumps, water heaters, energy storage, solar panels, wind turbines, EVs, and even the plug in hybrid cars that work out here! And I know you’re gonna be plantin’ vegies and winter hardy fruits like never before, so take a look at IRS Form F and you’ll probably find some farm tax savings there… Heck, we may not owe any federal taxes at all! But we still have to file, and should the power go out on April 15th again or whatever, handwritten long form 1040s and multiple schedules are perfectly legal, hope Trump don’t bring the grid down so we all have to file that way and the IRS’ll be backed up for years…

And finally, some Outreach and Inclusion housekeeping- The statewide committee met last month and their will be a virtual retreat online in mid February and probably another date for those that can’t make it. Local units will be asked to make an outreach and inclusion plan, sounds like there will be a form so it will be easy to fill out. We have an important SCC and Business Meeting on March 29th with at least 3 executive board seats open so we need to have all our delegates attend.

I’ll probably need to update this report more often than monthly- In not quite 2 weeks Trumps tried hostile takeovers of at least 3 countries and probably more when he finds a map and learns how to pronounce their names. Facebook is not as dem friendly as it was, so I’m posting these missives on my blog at www.sassy.democrat (that’s really a URL) too. I’m on Bluesky too @dynasluyter.bsky.app, it’s a twitter type site that isn’t infested with Trumpers and ‘bots.

As always, comments welcome.

Minnesota CD7 & SD15 Outreach Officers Report for January, 2025

CD7 & SD15 Outreach & Inclusion Officers Report for January 2025

The election sucked- We did OK here, but forgetting our farming and mining base in CDs 1 and 8 lost our state house majority while nationally the big D Democrats spending a billion $$$ couldn’t even beat an insane career criminal in the popular vote, never mind the electoral college and congress too. We are now stuck with years of misgovernment, and the only question is whether the GOP will do more damage by evil intent or just plain incompetence?

So what to do? Right now your social media is overflowing with demands that you protest in the streets or at least online… Half that content is probably from bots or their supposedly more educated “brethren”, AI. And none of it is going to accomplish much, other than get your name and handles on lists you don’t want to be on.

A bit of history is in order here- My Farmer Labor socialist grandparents were in attendance at the 1934 Teamsters Strike and numerous other actions, and grandma even managed to get thrown outa the party on accusations of being a communist ‘cause she signed a communist party candidate’s nomination petition. But they kept a low enough profile to avoid prison and became Carpenters and ILGWU officers and earned union scale and pensions through the “Red Scare” and survived to be elders of the “New Left”. Nixon like Trump swore vengence and weaponized federal prosecutors and grand juries to persecute his “Enemies List”. But his signature Vietnam war was cancelled due to lack of interest as by war end 98% of New York City draftees didn’t even show up for induction, while Stonewall kicked off another movement that wasn’t even on Nixon’s radar. Reagan’s union busting honed labor’s tactics by developing corporate campaigns and made the Teamsters a force in Minnesota politics, and his intentional ignorance of the AIDS epidemic further organized the queer communities. Brat Bush tried to capitalize on 9/11 and left us with a couple trillion national debt and fertile ground for the election of our first black president, Barack Obama.

Notice some common threads?

The first is timing- The GOP pretty much hold the levers of power through 2026 and maybe 2028 and beyond. Trump and his cast of incompetents will screw up, and when they don’t they won’t be helping us any- We can accurately predict they will create runaway inflation, a farm crisis, worker shortages, oandemic(s), and probably a war or three too. But we can’t  even replace the U.S. House and maybe the Senate until 2028 and they won’t take office until 2029. So our 1st priority for 2025 is surviving-  Stock up, lock down, and prepare for all the destruction a criminal senile insane Trump and his henchmen can do!

The 2nd common thread is decentralization- Jailing the 1934 Teamsters strike leaders, labelling the Teamsters as Communists during the Red Scare, and using RICO against the Teamsters in the 80s failed because the Teamsters are decentralized and use clever tactics like making the Secretary Treasurer the actual head of the union while the President was 2nd in command and targeted by the fascists. Same with HUAC, Nixon, Reagan, and Brat Bush- Their repressive focus was too narrow while our progressive democratic movements grew broader. After survival, our task for 2025 is to fix our own democratic farmer-labor party by decentralizing power away from the cities and reducing the self serving power of the extremists. After accomplishing that we can take back our party from the myopic power brokers and professional campaigners of metro DC and start demanding fair elections and win them.

Climate Change talking points: Why aren’t we Talkin’ ‘Bout Weather?

Noticed how the republicons have their memes all cued up to blame any random chance event on us democrats?

Weathers been a real shit show this winter, started with Hurricane Ian making thousands of Floridians homeless and filling up the motels and campgrounds down there in the swamp to the point I couldn’t afford to go down for the winter. Then Trump’s understudy gave me a whole bunch of other good reasons to avoid Florida. Winter hit Minnesota and points west early, hard, and repeatedly to the point I was using more diesel fuel in my tractor moving snow than my car, seems like we plowed snow 6 days a week and maybe got lucky on the 7th and ran out to restock.

Again our weather is challenging and breaking century old records faster than they can be updated, and much of Minnesota is a few snowflakes away from breaking all time seasonal snowfall records. But we democrats, especially the progressives, seem to think that talking about weather is beneath us- A preoccupation reserved for less intelligent republicans who can’t understand climate.

But for rural folks of all political persuasions, the message of wack’d weather is real and powerful- Pictured above is a township road in South Dakota that two days after the latest blizzard ended still hadn’t been plowed out, looks like a desperate farmer down the road cut a tractor wide path through snow on their own. For city folks climate change is an abstract concept, out here it’s real and can kill you.

That drift was taller than a jacked up pickup, and just past it the road turns to mud that’s probably damn near as deep- I turned around. These rural folks are living the real life consequences of climate change, but they call it weather. Weather is just climate change that hasn’t aged yet… Let’s talk weather and turn these folks into the most powerful claim activists!

2023: Politics Just Got Boring…

And that may be a good thing.

To recap 2022, Despite the expected midterm election headwinds we democrats held on to just about everything, save for losing what will now definitely be the “lower house” and gaining the odd U.S. Senate seat, governorship, and now the senate as well as the house and every statewide office here in Minnesota. This has been taken as a vote of confidence for our President Biden and he’s rising in the polls too, so the usual pilgrimages of democratic presidential hopefuls to neighboring Iowa will be down and on the “down low”, especially with Iowa’s lead off position in jeopardy.. Same on the republican side where even on the continual eve of indictment Trump’s reign of terror keeps any serious GOP candidate’s Iowa travels to plausibly deniable social calls and support at Iowa GOP fundraisers.

So this year you and I will be spared the joy of chasing democratic hopefuls in the candidate rich environment that is Iowa the year before caucuses. As for the GOP, they’re packing firearms and now COVID too, so I’ll give them a wide berth. Not much lost there- Used to be fun to record the republican hopefuls saying crazy stuff in deep red western Iowa where they thought no mainstream media was around, now they put their wacky Neo-nazism out for all to see on their websites and social media. So looks like I’ll spend 2023 riding motorcycles and watching the races and blogging over at http://www.GearheadGrrrl.com instead of here.

Out here in rural Minnesota 2024 doesn’t look real exciting either- The Republican Party has lost every statewide election since 2008 and the only statewide races will be for president and senator, which Joe Biden and Amy Klobuchar should win easily. Minnesota’s 8 congressional seats are devolving into an even 4 to 4 DFL to GOP split, so few surprises likely there. Down ballot the state senate gets a bye and while our DFL doesn’t quite have a supermajority in the house yet, the GOP is unlikely to win it back in a presidential election year. And out here in rural Minnesota the GOP is wasting almost as many votes “running up the score” with 40% and bigger victory margins as the DFL does in the cities.

So what’s a rural Minnesota democrat to do? Build up the party, run for and win “non-partisan” down ballot seats and take over every township, city, county, and conservation district. Better yet, become the “deep state” and go to work for the government and get paid for making Minnesotan’s lives better!

Elections 2022: WTHappened?

This was supposed to be a “shellacking”, with Republicans taking over pretty much every body up for election this year. The last runoff for a U.S. Senate seat from Georgia now decided in Democrats favor, it’s time to answer the question:

WTH?

The Republicans failed to wrest a single U.S. Senate seat from us Democrats and despite winning about 3% more votes in U.S. House races than the Democrats which should translate into about a 13 seat majority, they won only 8 more seats than us Democrats. We flipped 3 Republican held governorships to the Republicans 1, and 1 Secretary of State to the Republicans 0. Here in Minnesota we held every statewide office on the ballot and the state House while picking up 3 seats to gain a thin 1 seat majority in the Senate.

Again, WTH?

We didn’t win this election, the Republicans pretty much lost it by running unqualified extremist candidates they must have scraped up off the internet’s skid row. Despite Reverend and Senator Warnock’s well earned win in Georgia, the easy survival of a bunch of Republican candidates there proves that Georgia is not a purple state and candidate quality still matters a whole lot. Same thing happened in the Minnesota Senate races when a poorly vetted Republican candidate got himself in a scandal, our wise DFL Senate caucus vigorously campaigned in that Republican leaning district and won it. Republicans winning only about half the U.S. House seats there overall vote predicted suggests they’re having the same “wasted vote” problem as the Democrats, as rural Republican voters uselessly “run up the score” by their huge victory margins while their extremist candidates turned off even 3rd tier suburban voters. Here in Minnesota’s congressional races we Democrats won 4 seats with 329 thousand more votes than we needed while the Republicans won 4 seats with 281,000 more votes than they needed, figure in the lower voter turnout in Republican districts and that’s pretty much as wash. Thus the “political wing” of the Neo-Nazis AKA the Republican Party will struggle to govern in congress and well earn the title of “lower house” while in our Minnesota legislature they’ll engage in tiring floor theatrics while our Democrats govern.

WTH happens next election?

I’ll discuss our political future ’round New Years…

Election Day: Thanks for the Victories, GOP Jokers!

Political Science 101 teaches us that in a mid-term election, the party that doesn’t have the presidency tends to win Senate, Congressional, and lots more seats on down the ballot. Throw in inflation that the party in power really has little control over and this should have been a wave election for the Republicans, and they totally ignored that script. Was all the Trump worshipping and posing with assault rifles just a pilot pitching a series to the Comedy Channel while real political parties aim for prime airtime on CSPAN?

Having failed at domestic terrorism and elections, is the GOP even a serious political party?

If you were creating a political themed comedy you’d start with a plot line where your candidates make the wackiest statements possible- Accusing our most trusted guardians of our democracy of fraud and worse, feigning outrage over non existent trans athletes and immigrant workers, denying scientific facts en masse, supporting brutal dictators, and militant demonstrations against… Face masks? As for casting… What could be more comical than a carpetbagger TV Doc from New Jersey invading the proud rival Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to run for Senate, an unfaithful pro-lifer who virtually had a charge account at the abortion clinics, a top narcotic pusher and COVID denier who somehow still has a license, a hoard of extras decrying our fair elections while running for the offices that conduct our elections, Attorney General wannabes who’ve never tried a case, and self appointed military heroes who’ve never seen combat.

Nice try, republicans… If the Comedy Channel adds another channel or three and needs some cheap late night non union filler programming, they might maybe give you a call, and the couple minutes of disclaimers, trigger warnings, etc. that would have to precede and follow your poor attempts at comedy will kill even more time- A good thing because no advertiser would want to be within an hour or channel of your sick “humor”. Your sheepish concession speeches today said it all- You’re a damn poor excuse for a political party and ya ain’t funny either!
